The unit is indeed constructed from steel.Although this is labeled a Pizza Oven, the unit has lots of possibilities for outdoor cooking and hardwood charcoal can be used as well as any kind of untreated wood but avoid pine except for starting the fire. Twigs, wood pellets and wood chips can be used. Keep the door open to keep temp lower than 600 degrees. You can grill meat. fish and veggies on upper rack.Experiment! The cover fits well. I am going to get a marble tile to replace the thin tile provided which will probably break at some point. .
