I think this is a quality shelf for the price, if you’re willing and able to put in the work to finish it. Bonus points if you have some creative ideas!
This shelf arrived quickly and wrapped well. The hardware was in one separate bag with a red plastic stringer so it doesn’t get lost. It’s not terribly heavy, so it was easy enough for me (female, athletic, 5’8”) to remove from the box.
I did not treat with mineral spirits before staining; you should consider doing that. There were some spots in the wood I might have been able to avoid. I’ve heard that wood conditioner is recommended for pine; I might do that if I were to get this again. (Which I totally wood) (…get it?!)
I stained this with Briarsmoke by Varathane. I applied about 4 coats, sanding lightly in between and taking care to remove the opacity of the stain (it’s thick!). I added some creative distressing after the first coat to hide some of those spots I mentioned. After the first coat of polyurethane, i decided I couldn’t live with the Barbie-torso-colored, wood filler,faux knurled spots and did something drastic. I applied and lightly sanded a warm-toned metallic paint, to give a salvaged-from-an-alien-pirate-ship wood vibe. You can see some of that detail in the detail pic. Finally… what’s with the oddly suggestive fake wood knot shapes? Originally they stained super dark and looked awkward.
When I was finally finished, mounting this to the fireplace was simple (existing holes in mortar) but it doesn’t feel super steady (I used the mounting board included in the kit). You should expect to purchase the hardware needed to mount in a fireplace, but the corbels came with all required hardware.
This piece was an excellent value and a fun project. The mantel style is simple, but versatile enough to fit many different decor styles. I am handy, but not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, and I love how it turned out!
